The Three Biggest Mistakes First-Time Track Drivers Make

Three decades of professional racing, and I can tell you: every first-timer makes the same handful of mistakes. They’re not bad drivers. They’re just using road-driving instincts on a racetrack, and those instincts are often wrong. Here are the top three.

1. Gripping the Wheel Too Tight

On the street, you death-grip the wheel because your hands are the only connection between you and survival. On track, a tight grip transmits every bump into your steering correction — making the car feel twitchy and slow. Loosen up. Breathe. The car is more stable than your hands believe.

2. Looking at What’s Right in Front of You

Your eyes are your steering wheel. Road drivers stare at the hood of their car. Race drivers look through the corner, two or three apexes ahead. Where you look is where the car goes. We spend a huge part of the coaching session just training your eyes.

3. Braking Too Late and Turning Too Early

Every first-timer wants to brake right at the cone — they’ve seen the pros do it in YouTube videos. But the pros have spent decades building up to that. On your first laps, overshoot the braking zone on purpose. Get used to the feeling of deep, calm braking. Speed comes naturally once technique is solid.

The Good News

All three of these get fixed in the first 90 minutes of any session. That’s what professional coaching does — it fast-forwards through a decade of self-taught habits.

Come experience the difference. Book an experience and feel what championship-level coaching does to your driving.
